395 m

Abertysswg

Works in W NW

A minimal carry to take-off. The site can be turbulent in strong winds. Care and control is needed when launching paragliders in strong winds, as take-off is narrow, with rigged hang gliders and vehicles close by. The true wind speed can be much higher than at launch. If in doubt check at the top of the hill.

Fochriw

Works in SW W NW

Carry up the face of the hill to take-off. A short but sharp carry up. Beware of the many deep fissures close to the edge of the hill. There is less compression than at Merthyr, so strong winds at take-off are likely to be close to the real windspeed. Don‘t underestimate actual windspeed and risk getting blown back into the lee rotor and the power lines.

196 m

Garth Hill

Works in E SE S

here are two take-off areas, Southeast and East. Access to both is by foot only, a long hard carry up. Beware of rotor behind the East take-off.

Take-off and Landing There is plenty of room for taking off at either end of the quarry but the slope at the south end is of a gentler gradient and therefore easier to manage in strong conditions.

Rig and take-off from the grass area in front of the car park, a minimal carry. The hang glider launch is over a barbed wire fence, so a committed take-off is required. Rigging space at take-off is very limited; if necessary use the open land behind the road. Don‘t rig in the car park, or climb over fences. Always use the stile.
