South Downs · Southern Hang Gliding Club
Mount Caburn
A conical dome that takes the southerlies, but a small lift band and rough sea-breeze air mean it crowds and bites in equal measure.

Before you goPark only in the gated club field, keep the gate locked, and never overfly the cottages opposite. The lane has no other parking.

Open-Meteo
A south to south-west site, launchable anywhere from SSE round to SW. The sea breeze often roughens it and the lift band is usually small, so it fills up fast.
CP with top and slope landings signed off.
Launch the top of the dome on a narrow runway; stay off the ground below the earthworks (nesting birds and wild flowers). The quieter west ridge is the resident school's.
Land on the dome or the west spine, mindful of the barbed wire. The bottom field is south of the lane; approach south of the car park, clear of the cottages.
Controlled airspace sits just north at 4,500ft, dropping to 2,500ft a few kilometres on, so a northward push needs care.
Off the A27 in Ranscombe Lane, 2km SE of Lewes. The gated club field only, or park in the village and walk up. Postcode BN8 6RP.
A fence hides just behind launch, ready to drag you back. A south or south-east flow makes the tree line hard to clear into a bottom field of ditches, power lines, railway and cattle. Strong rotor builds behind the southerly ridge.
